Expressionism is a major artistic movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mainly in Germany, which is distinguished by a subjective and emotional representation of reality. Unlike Impressionism, which focuses on light and color, Expressionism aims to express the inner emotions and personal experiences of artists. This movement is often associated with a period of social, political and psychological upheaval, reflecting the anxieties and tensions of the time.

Expressionist painters, such as Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh, his precursors and Egon Schiele, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Wassily Kandinsky, used bright colors, distorted shapes and angular lines to convey intense feelings of fear, anguish, of passion and alienation. Their works seek to evoke a strong emotional response in the viewer, often by depicting scenes from everyday life, portraits or landscapes in a distorted and stylized manner.

Expressionism had a profound and lasting influence on modern art, paving the way for many other avant-garde art forms such as Surrealism and Abstraction. This movement also had a significant impact on literature, theater, cinema and architecture, contributing to a new way of seeing and representing the world through the prism of human emotions
