Portrait of Dr. Gachet
Portrait of Dr. Gachet
Year of creation: 1890
Dr. Gachet, a physician with a passion for art and a great collector, took care of Vincent van Gogh during the last weeks of his life in the summer of 1890. Two authentic and very similar versions of the Portrait of Dr. Gachet exist. In the 1990s, one of them became the most expensive art transaction in history, when it was sold to Japanese businessman Ryoei Saito for $82.5 million. In addition to characteristics such as colors, lines, and brushstrokes, the two versions are distinguished by the presence of two volumes on the table in the first version, which are absent in the second.
