The Great Wave of Kanagawa
The Great Wave of Kanagawa
Year of Creation: 1830 / 1831
The Great Wave of Kanagawa is a Japanese woodblock print made in 1830 during the Edo period by the famous artist Katsushika Hokusai. The artwork, which is part of the series "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji", is considered the most popular asian artwork in history. The use of Western perspective, combined with the new color in vogue at the time "Prussian Blue" delivered with an extremely effective metaphorical symbolism and obviously treated according to the rigorous rites of Japanese woodblock prints, immediately conquered Japan and quickly became a major source of inspiration in the West, especially among the Impressionists.
