Color Study
Color Study
Year of Creation: 1913
As Kandinsky was preparing for the large abstract compositions he would paint during these years, he made watercolors as practical exercises in the relationship between color and form. In this work, washes of watercolor applied in concentric rings flow into each other at their borders, transforming each other in the process. Such studies, in their methodical and systematic approach to color theory, anticipate Kandinsky's approach as a teacher at INKhUK (Institute of Artistic Culture), Moscow, a state-funded center for the scientific study of culture, from 1920 to 1922, and at the Bauhaus, the school of art and architecture in Weimar Germany, between 1923 and 1933.
