Self-portrait with Felt Hat
Self-portrait with Felt Hat
Year of creation: 1887
At the start of the winter of 1887-88, Vincent van Gogh ended his stay in Paris with his brother Théo. The “City of Lights” fascinates him and the artists he frequents inspire him. Under the influence of Paul Gauguin, he uses bold colors. His fearless version of Seurat's pointillism represents a daunting challenge. The anticipated artistic failure is transformed into a remarkable masterpiece, whose resemblance is striking, the intense expression and the piercing gaze reveal the complexity and sensitivity of the artist. The dynamic features that would become his signature began to emerge. The Self-Portrait with a Felt Hat became an important step in the recognition of Van Gogh.
