Seascape near les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer
Year of Creation: 1888
In June 1988, Van Gogh planned a week of complete rest on the Mediterranean coast. But this stay turned into a period of intense creation. In “Seascape near les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer”, he captured the variations of the sea. The bright colors of the boats and the hundred roofs of the village amazed the artist. Countless comings and goings from the beach to the village, new daring shades enriched his palette, marking his future work in Arles. This brief stay, where 24 works or sketches were created in seven days, marked a turning point in his artistic evolution. Vincent truly became Van Gogh.
