Bedroom in Arles
Bedroom in Arles
Year of Creation: 1888
In 1888-89, Vincent van Gogh produced 3 versions of “Bedroom in Arles” which he occupies in the Yellow House. Wishing to evoke the simplicity and calm of this place, he declares “The Japanese lived in very simple interiors, ... I wanted to express absolute rest”. The version presented, the third, smaller and more accomplished, has carefully applied colors, and a self-portrait appears on the side wall. Given as a gift to his sister, the painting stayed in Japan until 1953 before returning to the West. The artwork is now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
