American Gothic
Year of creation: 1930
Frequently copied, diverted, parodied, American Gothic painted by Grant Wood in 1930 is considered one of the most emblematic artworks of American art. The ambivalence of the message conveyed by the canvas allows an infinite number of interpretations of this masterpiece, largely inspired by Van Eyck's “Arnolfini Couple”, an artwork particularly appreciated by Wood. The modest house, the solid and severe male character as well as the submissive and austere female character, were never brought together, and were painted separately with undeniable talent by Wood. The fork, for its part, has a symbolic role that can be understood and explained in many ways!
